Liuyao explained: from najia to a sandbox for real decisions

Liuyao, also called najia divination or the Huozhulin method, is the most fully developed of the classical Chinese systems for reasoning about a single question. This guide covers what sits underneath it, how a reading is actually run, where its boundaries are, and how it differs from the other traditions people confuse it with.

⚠️ BEFORE YOU READ

Everything here treats Liuyao as Chinese traditional culture, folklore and classical logic, studied as such. It carries no causal relationship established by modern science, and it is not investment advice, financial guidance, legal counsel, or a basis for any decision. Read it as culture, and do not take it on faith.

I · WHAT LIUYAO IS

The logic underneath the ritual

At bottom, Liuyao is what people built after watching natural cycles and how people work with each other for a long time: a sandbox for thinking through a decision and your own state of mind while making it.

I · 1

From two strokes to a six-position model

A line is the smallest unit of a hexagram, either yang or yin. Six of them stack from the bottom up: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, top.

The six are not independent of one another. Together they trace a full arc, from something starting, through building and peaking, into decline and an end. They also map onto structure: in a company, the first line is the shop floor and the fifth is where decisions get made.

I · 2

Najia: bringing in the five elements

Early I Ching divination read the judgments and line texts, which is literary work and correspondingly vague. Jing Fang, a scholar of the Western Han, broke with that. He assigned the ten heavenly stems, the twelve earthly branches and the five elements into every line of all sixty-four hexagrams by strict rule, and that assignment is what najia means.

After it, the lines are no longer abstract marks. Each carries strength or weakness and stands in live relationships with the others: generating, controlling, clashing, combining, punishing, harming. That is what moved the method off pure intuition and onto something you can reason about step by step.

The procedure originally ran on fifty yarrow stalks and was laborious. From the Song onward it was simplified to three coins, which is when ordinary households could use it. Qing dynasty works, Zengshan Buyi and Bushi Zhengzong among them, tightened up the reading rules, and what is practised today mostly follows them.

I · 3

The relatives and the two axes

To get from abstract element relationships to actual human situations, the system adds the six relatives and the self and other lines. Comparing the palace's element against each line's element produces five roles: Parent, Sibling, Offspring, Wealth, Officer.

The self and other lines are the axes. The self line is pinned to the person asking and carries their intent, their resources, their frame of mind. The other line is whatever they are facing: the person across the table, the company they applied to, the market around the instrument they hold.

Between the two axes and the five roles, a real situation gets modelled in full on a single chart.

OffspringI generatewhatever I raise, and whatever relieves worrychildren and juniors, students; doctors and medicine, clergy; livestock; sun and stars, clear weather; warding off troublethe thing that feeds gain; what covers downside

Officercontrols mewhatever constrains or limits meoffice and rank, advancement, examinations; a husband, a superior; litigation; doubt, illness, theft, disastercompliance, external pressure, shocks

The palace's element is the self. A line's identity is not fixed: the Parent line is the subject when asking about a house and the adversary when asking about children. Reassign according to the question. The right column is an analogy used in study, not a real-world correspondence.

Read across: in the metal palaces, metal is Sibling, earth is Parent, wood is Wealth, fire is Officer, water is Offspring. The traditional mnemonic sets this out in five rhymed lines, one per row.

I · 3 REFERENCE (3)

Source, adversary and the line behind the adversary

Once the subject line is fixed, every other line takes a position relative to it. What generates the subject is its source. What controls the subject is its adversary. What controls the source is the line standing behind the adversary.

A moving source strengthens the subject. A moving adversary presses on it. When the line behind the adversary moves, it takes out the source and weakens the subject indirectly. For a money question: Wealth is the subject, Offspring is the source, Sibling is the adversary, and Parent stands behind it, since Parent controls Offspring.

Reading a situation means weighing how those four sit against one another, not looking up whether any single line is auspicious.

II · THE PROCEDURE

Seven steps

In study and in practice, a properly run reading goes through the following.

II · 1

Settle the question

One matter, one casting. Before you throw anything, the boundary of what you are asking has to be clear. Something like how will my finances be is too loose and the chart comes back muddy in proportion. A workable question fixes a period and an object: how a particular position sits over a particular stretch, for instance.

II · 2

Cast and record

The old procedure used fifty yarrow stalks; from the Song it was simplified to coins. Take three identical coins, hold them closed in both hands, settle on the question, shake and throw. Six times.

Telling the faces apart: on old cash, the side with the inscription is the face and counts as script; the blank or Manchu side counts as back. On modern coins, take the side showing the denomination as script. Which coins you use does not matter; using one convention consistently across all six throws does. Each throw, count how many backs came up, which fixes that line's yin or yang and whether it moves. Record from the bottom up until you have six.

three scriptcrossedold yin▅▅ ▅▅ ×moving, yin turns yang

Old yang and old yin are the moving lines, and they are what produces the changed hexagram. Young yang and young yin stay put in both. Conventions for which face counts as which vary between schools; internal consistency within one casting is what matters.

II · 3

Prepare the chart

Most work now uses software or a printed table. Write in the stem and branch for the year, month, day and hour of casting, then assign each of the six lines its branch, element and relative. From wherever old yang or old yin came up, mark the moving lines and derive the changed hexagram.

II · 4

Pick the subject line

Choose one of the relatives according to what you are asking about. Commercial value goes to Wealth, compliance and risk to Officer, industry policy or contracts to Parent. That line is the protagonist of the reading; everything else is read in relation to it.

II · 5

Weigh strength

Put the subject line and the self line against the time the chart was cast. The month branch and the day branch have the final say on how much force anything carries. A line supported by either is strong. A line controlled or clashed by them is weak or broken.

II · 6

Read what is moving

Moving lines are the variables. A moving line acts on the others, and what it turns into says where that variable ends up. A Wealth line that moves and produces a Sibling line is the standard example: Sibling controls Wealth, so the movement turns back on itself, which reads as a path with real sunk cost in it.

II · 7

Work out the timing

Combination, clash, occupying and matching between branches give you the window in which a state is likely to show itself. A subject line sitting void, for instance, is generally treated as out of play until the day it gets clashed open or filled, and only then does that variable count as having entered.

III · WHERE IT SITS AMONG THE OTHERS

Avoiding a common confusion

To keep the categories straight, and to pick sensibly when you have a specific need, it helps to draw the line between Liuyao and BaZi, tarot and Plum Blossom numerology.

III · 1

Against BaZi: the long arc and the single decision

BaZi needs an exact birth time and reads the long arc of a life: the broad trajectory, the ten-year cycles and annual periods, the shape of what someone was born into. It works at the strategic level.

Liuyao needs no birth data and works at the tactical level. When the question is whether a specific project should go ahead, how a particular sum will turn over, or how one interview will go, the broad strokes of a ten-year cycle are too coarse to help, and this is where Liuyao does its work. BaZi is the map; Liuyao is the turn-by-turn.

III · 2

Against tarot: rules against imagery

Tarot rests on Jung's archetypes and on synchronicity. It is very good at surfacing someone's state of mind, the knots in a relationship, what they half know but have not said. Reading it well means reading people.

Liuyao is the eastern, rule-bound end of the spectrum. It runs on generation and control between symbols, so a reader having an off day still gets the same relationships off the chart, provided the procedure was followed. The two took different routes; neither is above the other.

III · 3

Against Plum Blossom: rules against inspiration

Plum Blossom numerology comes from the same source but takes the light, image-led route. It holds that you cast only when something moves: a sound, a colour, whatever just happened converts to a hexagram on the spot. Reading it leans almost entirely on the practitioner's feel for omens, and it tends to land in a single stroke.

Liuyao is the procedural one. Casting has to be done properly, and in exchange every conclusion sits inside a network of branches and elements that cross-check each other, so you can retrace how you got there. For situations with several parties and real stakes, that traceability is worth a lot.

IV · SCOPE AND LIMITS

Know the boundary before using it

No classical model covers everything. Knowing where this one is strong and where it is blind is the precondition for using it at all.

IV · 1

Where it has a place, as folklore and cultural study

Studying investor psychology· Thinking about how much price movement in a given asset you can actually stomach, which the self line describes
Modelling a commercial situation· As a classical management lens, laying out the parties to a contract or a partnership and how they stand toward each other
Checking your own state at work· Getting honest about where your head is when a promotion round or a competitive situation is under way
Lost objects and folklore proper· Working out where something went from line position and element. Of everything in the tradition this is the best documented and the easiest to check afterwards
IV · 2

Where it has no place at all

Standing in for professional judgement· This model is never a substitute for securities analysis, financial audit, legal assessment or medical diagnosis
Wishful questions with no footing· When will I become a billionaire has no stage, no boundary and no realistic footing. The tradition has a word for casting on questions like this, and holds that nothing useful comes back
Anything against the law or basic decency· Readings aimed at breaking the law or harming someone violate the basic terms people live under. This site refuses them outright
V · CLOSING

Reason from principle

Liuyao is not blind superstition. What sits underneath it is an early, serious attempt to think about cause, timing and the relationship between a person and their circumstances. By turning people, matters and objects into stems, branches and elements, it hands you a third-party coordinate system: a way of looking at a situation from outside it rather than from inside.

Used honestly, it means reasoning from principle, holding the chart against the actual circumstances rather than in place of them. That is where any real value in it comes from.

VI · COMMON QUESTIONS

Are Liuyao, the King Wen method, Najia divination and Huozhulin the same thing?

Four names for one method. Liuyao after the six lines, Najia divination after the assignment of stems and branches, the King Wen method after its traditional attribution, and Huozhulin after the Song text recording the simplified casting.

Do I have to memorize all sixty-four hexagrams first?

No. A reading runs on the branch and element relationships that exist after preparation, with the classical text as reference. Stems and branches, the five-element cycle, and the clash, combination, punishment and harm relations are the real groundwork. Hexagram names and palace assignments can be looked up.

Can I cast without a birth time?

Yes. Liuyao uses only the moment of casting and the question held in mind. No birth data is involved, which is why it is far easier to reach for than BaZi.

Can I ask about the same thing repeatedly?

One matter, one casting, by tradition. An unsettled question means an unfocused mind, and that produces a muddy chart. A fresh casting is warranted when the situation itself has materially changed.

Can it produce a specific percentage move?

No. Our readings go as far as direction, relative strength and timing. We make no claim about price levels or magnitude. Liuyao is a classical cultural model with no scientifically established causation, it is no substitute for securities analysis, and investment decisions belong to professional research.

VII · IF YOU ARE READING ABOUT MONEY

Within the tradition, people have tried using the five-element model to stand in for the flow of money through a market, with the Wealth line as the buying side. Modern markets, however, respond to macroeconomics, geopolitics, regulation and algorithmic trading, among a great many other things at once. Applied to finance, Liuyao is a matter of classical interest only. It is never a substitute for professional securities analysis, technical work on price, or fundamental research.

VII · IF YOU ARE READING ABOUT A DECISION

Promotion, a contract, anything of that weight: what the chart reflects is the state of mind and the perception of the person casting it. Whether the thing succeeds still comes down to the work you put in, the skills you have, and handling it lawfully and properly. Do not let a chart make you complacent, and do not let one make you give up.
